Admission Requirements

This Department requires a baccalaureate in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering program. The detailed requirements for admission into Master of Science program in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering are as follows: 

Civil Engineering Undergraduate Majors: 

  • Students with GPA ≥ 2.70: admitted as a classified student; 
  • Students with 2.50  GPA < 2.70: admitted as a conditionally classified student with a requirement to make grades of B or better in first two graduate courses.

Other Engineering Undergraduate Majors: 

  • Students with GPA ≥ 2.70: admitted as a conditionally classified student with the requirement to make up courses from list to be determined; 
  • Students with 2.50  GPA < 2.70: admitted as a conditionally classified student with a requirement to make grades of B or better in first two graduate courses and make up courses from list to be determined. 

Other Undergraduate Majors: 

  • Students with GPA ≥ 2.70: admitted as a conditionally classified student with a requirement to make grades of B or better in first two graduate courses and make up courses from list to be determined. 

English-language proficiency exam:

  • An English-language proficiency exam is required for all students who graduated from a higher education institution in a country in which the primary language is not English. The exams accepted by this university include the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), and the Pearson Test of English (PTE).  The university minimum entrance score for the TOEFL is 550 (paper based; note that this form is not accepted by some individual departments within the university), 213 (computer based), or 80 (internet based). The minimum score required on the IELTS is 7.0 and the PTE 68. All test scores must be less than two years old. Test scores must be sent directly from the testing office to San Jose State (SJSU institution code is 4687).

GRE is not required
